Q 2.29 Project #2 Group Presentations Analyze a stereotype in the media of a specific group that is portrayed as "the other." Instructions: 1. Choose a group that you want to work with, including African Americans, Asians, Homeless, Jews, Muslims, Latinos, immigrants, LGBTQ, people with disabilities, the poor, people with mental/emotional challenges, teen mothers, ex-felons, and women. You can also choose to focus on a group that is not on this list. 2. To join a group, click on the "people" tab on the navigation bar on the left, then click on the "Project #2 groups" tab at the top, then next to the name of the group topic you are interested in, click the join link. See these instructions for further information. 3. Choose a visual image to analyze. This includes images and clips from film, television, art, advertisement, and social media. 4. Using the library databases and websites to research cultural representations of the group you are studying. Make sure to assess your web sources. 5. Using the cultural studies framework described in the course readings and videos, perform a cultural analysis where you analyze the message that visual media sends about how the group topic you choose is othered. 6. You can create a PowerPoint or video presentation (you can use the "Studio" link on the left-hand side navigation bar). Here are the steps you need to take: 1. Communicate with your canvas group by clicking on the group topic that you have joined. Discuss how you will break the group down so that each student has their own sub-topic. 2. Research the negative stereotypes and discriminatory practices towards this group and share your research with your group. 3. Each student should have at least 4 slides. There should be an introductory slide that conveys your main point or argument, and then 3 or 4 slides that convey your research using your own words. It would be good to chunk your material so the text blocks are not too dense, and you will want to balance your text with visual representations. A good website to find visuals is https://search.creativecommons.org/. 4. Select one person to compile the research into a PowerPoint presentation or video. 5. Make sure that each group member's contribution to the presentation is clearly labeled with the person's name since the project is evaluated on an individual basis.
